The original PRS idea was to straddle the Fender and Gibson zones tone-wise. There were variations that came out even back then that drive up the price too, like a rosewood neck(McRosie) or P90's(McSoapy) or a trem(McTrem). A really clean 10 top with birds is definitely going to cost more than a lesser top with moons and some real life bumps and scratches and play wear. ![]() Not everyone loves their pickups but there are tons of options if you want to go play the eternal pickup quest game.Īs far as value goes, it depends on the condition and features of the McCarty. I switched from a couple of Les Pauls to my 2000 McCarty in 2000 and never looked back. The wide fat necks seems to be pretty consistent but I'd say in general it's slightly smaller than some of the Gibson baseball bat necks. Still, you can get a whole lot of useful humbucking tones out of one. If it's stock there should be a push/pull feature on the tone knob that let's you get an ok single coil sound but it's definitely not going to replace a Strat. ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't have a 1998 but I do have a 2000 and a 2002 and back then McCarties were pretty consistent before PRS started changing things up to keep people interested.Ī McCarty is more mid focused with the stock pickups and definitely snappier than a Les Paul.
